The Records Revealed What Mom Had Really Done

Mom tried to explain the transfers as money Grandpa had “wanted the family to have,” but the records told a different story. More than $260,000 had moved from his accounts over five years, much of it toward expenses connected to Bexley’s lifestyle business. Several authorization documents also contained signatures my attorney believed needed closer examination. The judge did not decide everything from one dramatic moment. Instead, the court ordered a full accounting and preservation of the remaining estate records while the disputed transactions were investigated.

Grandpa’s wishes about the cabin were much clearer. His will, trust documents, letters, and years of correspondence consistently named me as the person he wanted to receive it. Once the estate proceedings were completed, the court confirmed my ownership. Bexley was required to leave through the proper legal process, and Mom was ordered to repay money the court determined had been improperly taken, with the remaining financial issues handled separately.
Weeks later, I stood on Grandpa’s porch with the original leather key fob in my hand. The plastic flowers were gone. The old locks had been replaced, and his wildflowers were still growing underneath.

Mom had insisted Grandpa was merely sentimental.

She never understood that he had also been careful.

And fortunately for me, he had written everything down.
