The Bank Documents Finally Ended Gerald’s Control

Mr. Pierce clicked the authorization only after the bank’s legal department confirmed the documents. Essential company payments remained untouched, but Gerald’s discretionary authority disappeared immediately. His executive card stopped working. So did Renata’s and Marcus’s. More importantly, the three distribution properties could no longer be pledged without the approvals required under the restructuring agreement. The real estate proposal was effectively dead.

My phone rang continuously while I drove toward headquarters. By the time I arrived, Gerald had already gathered senior managers in the conference room and announced that Marcus would replace me as head of operations. He was pouring champagne when the chief financial officer entered carrying the bank notice. Gerald read the first page twice. Then he looked at me. “You froze my company.” I corrected him quietly. “No. The agreement you signed protected the company.”
