Brooke’s livestream ended less than five minutes later. By then, several viewers had already begun asking why someone who claimed to be homeless had arrived with furniture, expensive luggage, and a moving truck without permission. I did not respond publicly. My attorney preserved the video, the messages from relatives, and the security footage showing that I had repeatedly asked them to leave peacefully.
The mortgage review proceeded exactly as it would have for any other borrower. My company’s investment arm did not accelerate anything, waive anything, or punish them because they were related to me. Diane and Brooke were offered the same options available under the servicing process: provide updated financial information, discuss repayment possibilities, refinance elsewhere if qualified, or sell before the situation worsened. For once, nobody could call me and make their obligations disappear.
Three days later, Brooke emailed an apology that quickly turned into a request for money. She wanted enough to cure the arrears and rent a larger house where she and Mom could “start fresh.” I declined. Diane eventually sold several valuables, Brooke returned to full-time work, and they negotiated their own arrangement with the lender without receiving special treatment from me. The moving truck never crossed my gate.
Months later, a relative asked whether owning their mortgage had felt like revenge. It had not. Revenge would have meant using power differently because I was angry. I had done the opposite. I followed the same rules I would have expected for any stranger. Thirteen years earlier, my family taught me that being responsible meant cleaning up Brooke’s mistakes. It took me much longer to learn the healthier meaning of responsibility: handling your own life properly without taking ownership of somebody else’s consequences. My home remained quiet, the cedarwood oil still sat beside my laptop, and nobody entered unless I opened the gate.
