The Teller Pointed Straight at His Mother

“The one in the navy suit.”

Nobody moved. My husband’s mother slowly lowered her hand from her collar as Mrs. Whitaker explained that she was the woman who had appeared at her window four times using my identification. She remembered the emerald ring because she had complimented it during the first withdrawal. The judge did not immediately declare anyone guilty. Instead, the hearing was paused while the bank records, security footage, and identification procedures were formally reviewed.

What followed was worse for my husband than anything I could have said myself. The bank reopened its fraud investigation, and records obtained during the divorce showed messages between him and his mother discussing when I worked double shifts and which branch I never used. Investigators also recovered a photograph of my grandmother’s ring from her phone. The missing $74,000 was now being treated as disputed property while authorities determined exactly who had taken it and where it had gone.
My husband stopped smiling.

His attorney quietly asked for another recess.

I looked at the withdrawal slips spread across the table—the same papers they had brought into court believing they would destroy me.

For six months, everyone had asked why I could not explain where the money went.

Now, for the first time, they were asking him.
