The Judge Revealed Who Really Owned Everything

The records my attorney obtained showed exactly what Dad had never bothered to verify. Six years earlier, Grandpa had transferred the entire Harlowe building to me through a properly recorded deed while retaining the right to collect income from it during his lifetime. After his death, that retained interest ended. Dad had been named to handle other parts of Grandpa’s estate, but he had no authority to reassign my apartment—or any other unit in the building.

Grayson learned that the hard way when he forced his way inside with moving boxes while I was at work. I called police, showed them the recorded deed and proof that I lived there, and Grayson was escorted out without anyone turning it into a family showdown. Afterward, Dad challenged the transfer, claiming Grandpa had been confused when he signed it. Months of medical records, attorney notes, witnesses, and earlier letters showed Grandpa had planned the transfer carefully and understood exactly what he was doing.
At the final hearing, the judge looked at Dad and asked whether he had anything else to say before the remaining records were reviewed.

He didn’t.

The court confirmed my ownership.

Outside, Grayson muttered, “Grandpa never told us.”

I looked at him.

“He didn’t need your permission.”

They had spent months deciding who deserved my apartment.

The only person whose decision mattered had made it years earlier.
