Orange Marks on Your Towels Aren’t Stains—Here’s the Likely Cause

Those mysterious orange patches appearing on gray or dark towels may look like rust, makeup, or dirt, but they are often areas where the fabric’s dye has been permanently bleached. This explains why ordinary detergent and stain removers fail to wash them away.

One common culprit is benzoyl peroxide, an ingredient found in many acne creams, cleansers, and spot treatments. Small amounts can remain on the face or hands after washing and transfer onto a towel. Benzoyl peroxide can remove color from dyed fabric, often leaving orange, peach, pink, or pale marks depending on the original towel color.

Similar discoloration may also be caused by whitening toothpaste, hair products, bleach-based bathroom sprays, or other skincare products containing bleaching ingredients. If every towel develops marks in the same area, consider which products are used immediately before drying your face or hands.
Unfortunately, once the dye has been removed, the mark cannot simply be washed out because it is no longer a normal stain. The practical options are re-dyeing the towel, repurposing it for cleaning, or replacing it.

To prevent future damage, rinse skincare products off thoroughly, wash your hands after applying treatments, allow leave-on products to dry completely, and use white or bleach-resistant towels. Also keep bathroom cleaning sprays away from hanging fabrics.

The orange patch may be frustrating, but it usually doesn’t mean the towel is dirty. It is more likely evidence that an everyday product has quietly removed its color.
