The Invitation Came Too Late to Matter

Desmond stared at the divorce petition while I explained what would happen next. The penthouse belonged to my holding company, but I was not pretending that ownership allowed me to throw my husband onto the sidewalk that afternoon. Harrison would handle temporary possession and the divorce through the proper process. What ended immediately were the voluntary payments, family allowances, memberships, and expenses that had flowed from my accounts for eleven years.

The ancestral estate was already gone. After Ashby Holdings exercised its termination clause, another buyer moved forward. Marguerite called me furious when she learned the purchaser was a commercial development group exploring an office conversion subject to preservation and zoning approvals. She demanded that I buy it back before the Hollingsworth name was “humiliated.” I reminded her that five days earlier, that same name had apparently been too important to associate publicly with me at Arabella’s wedding.
Desmond finally asked whether there was anything he could do to stop the divorce.

I looked at the gold invitation lying beside the green ledger.

“You could have chosen me before my money disappeared,” I said. “Choosing me afterward isn’t the same thing.”

I left the invitation on the counter.

For eleven years, I had confused being useful with being loved.

The final $75,000 deposit taught me something cheaper than another decade ever could: belonging that has to be purchased is not belonging at all.
