State police found my parents at a motel nearly seventy miles away. They initially claimed I had become aggressive and demanded to be let out of the truck. The highway footage destroyed that story. It showed my father removing our belongings, my mother keeping Eli inside until the final moment, and both of them driving away while he begged them to stop.

Officers recovered my wallet, keys, phone, and charger from their room. Messages on my mother’s tablet revealed the rest of the plan. They wanted me to sign over control of an account my late grandfather had created for Eli’s education. When I refused, they decided to frighten me into “remembering who family was.”

They were arrested for child endangerment, theft, and abandoning a vulnerable child beside a highway in freezing weather. Eli’s bruise was documented at the hospital, and the truck driver provided a full statement about the condition in which he found us.

My parents called repeatedly after being released, insisting they had only intended to teach me a lesson. I secured a protective order and permanently removed them from every emergency contact, school authorization, and financial account connected to my son.

Months later, my mother wrote that one terrible night should not erase a lifetime of family.
