My Son Excluded Me Then Lost Everything I Funded

Liam’s name appeared on a trust account I had created after his mother died. I had planned to transfer a rental property to him once he became financially independent. Instead, my attorney discovered that Liam and Adrienne had already been presenting the property as theirs while applying for loans and discussing a future sale.

They had even used photographs of the building in their wedding materials, telling guests it was part of their investment portfolio.

I closed the monthly support account immediately and removed Liam as the trust’s future beneficiary. The property remained entirely mine. I also changed my will and redirected the education fund I had once reserved for his future children toward scholarships for students who had lost a parent.

When the rent payment failed, Liam called repeatedly. He demanded to know why I was “punishing” him over one invitation. Adrienne reminded me that successful parents were supposed to help their children maintain the lifestyle they had built.

I finally told them what I had found.

Their loan application collapsed once the lender learned they had no ownership interest in the property. Without my monthly transfers, they could not afford their apartment or the debt from their 150-person “small ceremony.”

Liam later came to my house alone and apologized. I told him I loved him, but love would no longer arrive as an automatic payment.

He wanted a wedding filled only with his peers.

So I stopped financing a life in which his father was welcome only as a bank account.
