They Returned Only Because They Needed Money

Monica explained that Jake’s business had collapsed, his mortgage was months behind, and several creditors were threatening legal action. Then she leaned forward and said the family believed I should lend him $300,000 because I had “more than enough.” Jake finally spoke, but there was no apology in his voice. He said helping him would prove I had moved past old grudges.

I asked whether any of them had called when my first workshop burned down, when I slept inside my truck, or when I spent years building the company they now admired. Nobody answered. Grandma Patricia said the past should remain buried. I agreed, then reminded her that they had buried me with it.

I walked to my office and returned with a folder. Inside were records of messages they had ignored, invitations they had declined, and the loan request Jake had already submitted using my company’s name as a supposed guarantor. That explained the blonde woman. Brittany worked for the lender and had come hoping I would confirm the arrangement.

I refused.

Jake’s application was rejected, and the lender opened a fraud review. My family left angry, calling me selfish from the driveway.

Before closing the door, I said, “You did not come here because you missed me. You came because failure finally learned my address.”
