Which Side of a New Fence Should Face Your Neighbor?

When installing a new fence, many homeowners naturally want the smooth, attractive side facing their own yard. After all, they are paying for it and will probably look at it every day. However, the correct orientation may depend on local regulations rather than personal preference.

Traditionally, the finished or “good” side of a fence faces outward toward the neighboring property or street. The posts, rails, and other structural supports face inward toward the property of the person installing it. Several municipalities specifically require this arrangement, although fencing rules vary between cities, counties, homeowners’ associations, and housing developments.

Besides looking more courteous, facing the supports inward can improve security. If the horizontal rails are outside, they may create footholds that make the fence easier to climb. Keeping them inside also gives the owner easier access for repairs and maintenance.

Couples who dislike seeing the structural side can choose a double-sided or “good neighbor” fence. These designs either conceal the supports or alternate panels so both properties receive an attractive view. They may cost more, but they can prevent arguments and create a finished appearance on both sides.

Before construction begins, check local zoning rules, permit requirements, property boundaries, and any homeowners’ association guidelines. Your husband may be correct that the finished side must face the neighbor, but the only reliable answer comes from the rules where you live.
