Karoline Leavitt Defends Trump After Katie Zacharia’s Abrupt White House Exit, Comparing President’s Quick Decision to His “Apprentice” Days During Bill Maher Interview

Former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended President Donald Trump’s decision to replace her successor, Katie Zacharia, less than a week after Zacharia took over the job.

Appearing Friday on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Leavitt said the press secretary position is extremely demanding and praised Zacharia for accepting the challenge. She said Trump ultimately concluded that Zacharia “wasn’t a good fit,” adding that she wished her well and believed the president had numerous candidates available for the position. deadline.com

Leavitt also referenced Trump’s years hosting The Apprentice, joking that the president has long been known for “moving on from people.” Maher responded by comparing Zacharia’s short tenure to a pitcher being removed unusually early from a baseball game.

Zacharia was appointed October 9 and left the White House press secretary position on October 16 after only five days in the role. She conducted one formal briefing, lasting approximately 14 minutes, before her departure. Her brief tenure also drew scrutiny over questions surrounding how she had described her legal credentials. Trump later said he believed Zacharia had been treated unfairly by the media but agreed the position was not the right fit. AP News

Leavitt, meanwhile, left the administration in August to spend more time with her family. Fox News has since announced that she will join the network as an on-air contributor beginning November 1. Fox News

Her Maher appearance offered a rare public discussion of the rapid White House personnel change while also showing that Leavitt remains supportive of her former boss despite leaving the administration.
