The Survey Line Cost Priscilla Nearly Everything

By noon, my attorney, a licensed surveyor, and the county inspector were standing beside the slab. The survey pins had never moved. Twelve feet of Priscilla’s new foundation crossed the recorded boundary exactly where I said it did. Her contractor admitted she had ordered construction to continue despite receiving an earlier site-plan warning. Suddenly, the twenty-thousand-dollar “offer” looked less like generosity and more like an attempt to make the problem disappear cheaply.

I did not simply attack the slab with machinery. My attorney documented the encroachment, the inspector stopped further construction, and Priscilla was formally notified that I would not grant an easement or sell the land. Because the concrete was still relatively new, her contractor explained that removing the encroaching section immediately would be far less complicated than waiting until the entire structure was completed around it.

Two days later, under the required supervision, equipment arrived and the portion extending onto my property was removed. Priscilla stood behind her temporary fence watching thousands of dollars in concrete become broken rubble. The remaining foundation also required engineering changes because the original design depended on the section crossing my boundary. Her $185,000 pour became substantially more expensive once redesign, removal, delays, and professional fees were added.

Months later, Priscilla’s house was finally completed entirely on her own land. She never apologized. She did, however, stop walking across my property and talking about what my acreage was “worth to me.” Jolene eventually built the horse enclosure she had wanted, positioned comfortably inside our surveyed line. Priscilla had believed pouring concrete while I was away would turn trespassing into ownership. Instead, the boundary stayed exactly where it had always been. The only thing that moved was her foundation.
