The Ring Returned, But The Debt Didn’t

I placed a slice of roast beef on the plate, added potatoes, and slid it toward Wesley’s mother. Then I removed the ring. “This belonged to your mother, so I’m returning it because it isn’t mine to keep.” I set it beside her plate. “But I will not be paying you $11,800 for decisions your family made around a wedding your son abandoned.” The room stayed so quiet I could hear the serving spoon touch the metal pan.

She immediately mentioned the rehearsal supper and honeymoon cruise. My father stood then, but I raised my hand again. I explained that I had never signed the cruise contract, never promised reimbursement, and had not canceled the wedding. Wesley had. His own brother had confirmed he was sitting safely beside the lake after choosing not to appear. If his family believed someone owed them money, they were welcome to discuss it with him.

Her face turned bright red. She took the ring, refused the plate, and left. Ten minutes later, the band started playing. Grandma Opal demanded the first dance, so there I was in a wedding dress and white sneakers, spinning an eighty-nine-year-old woman around a VFW floor while 175 guests laughed and applauded.

Wesley finally called shortly after midnight. He apologized, then asked whether I had returned his mother’s ring. That was his first question. Not whether I was okay. Not what happened to the guests. Just the ring. I told him it was already back where it belonged, and so was I—with people who had actually shown up. His family never received $11,800 from me. My father’s dinner was eaten, the cake was cut, and the wedding day I thought had been ruined became the day I stopped begging anyone to choose me.
