When I opened the front door, I found a brand-new rocking chair on the porch with a ribbon tied around it. Resting on the seat was the photo album I had given my grandson, now opened to the first page.

A note beside it read, “Grandma, I’m sorry I didn’t react properly. I was trying not to cry in front of everyone.”

My daughter later explained that he had spent most of the night reading every message and studying every photograph. He had assumed the album would contain only old family pictures, but the handwritten notes reminded him of birthdays, holidays, school events, and ordinary afternoons he had nearly forgotten.

The rocking chair had been something I quietly admired for years but never bought because it felt too expensive. My grandson had saved money from his part-time job and planned to surprise me after moving into his first apartment.

When he arrived later that morning, he hugged me and admitted the album was the most meaningful gift he had received. Expensive furniture could be replaced, he said, but the stories I had preserved existed nowhere else.

We sat together on the porch and looked through every page again. This time, he asked questions about relatives he had never met and memories he had been too young to remember.

I had worried that my humble gift meant little to him. In reality, it gave him something money could never purchase: a carefully preserved piece of where he came from.
