The Deed Book Held Augusta’s Final Gift

Under my name were words I had to read three times before they made sense. Six months before her death, Augusta Pennington had transferred the little white tenant cottage, the pecan grove behind it, and nearly seven acres of surrounding land into my name. The deed had been properly signed, witnessed, notarized, and recorded. Mavis smiled through tears. “Augusta wanted you to know this wasn’t charity, Odessa. She said you had spent most of your life caring for this family.”

I drove home shaking. The cottage was the same place where I had taken my first steps and watched Mama hang sheets on the clothesline. I had believed the Penningtons still owned it. Two days later, Merritt called. His voice was no longer cold. He demanded to know why I had “taken advantage” of his mother. Dewitt threatened to contest everything. I told them I had known nothing about the deed until the courthouse called.

Their attorney reviewed the transfer. Augusta had completed it while fully competent, months before her death, with independent witnesses present. She had also left a handwritten statement explaining exactly why. “Odessa and her mother cared for this family when my sons were too busy to notice,” she wrote. “This is gratitude, not payment.”

The sons never apologized for leaving me outside that back door. Eventually, they sold the farmhouse and most of the remaining acreage. I moved into the little cottage permanently and stopped cleaning houses altogether. Every autumn, I gathered pecans beneath the same trees Mama once tended and thought about Augusta asking how to spell my middle name. That $250 check is still tucked inside my Bible. Not because I needed the money, but because it reminds me how little those men believed twenty-eight years of loyalty was worth—and how differently their mother saw it.
