The Folder Exposed Marcus’s Other Secret Life

Vivian opened the folder and showed me financial records bearing my name. Marcus had used joint accounts and documents from our marriage to guarantee business debts I knew nothing about. Several transfers had also gone to an apartment connected to the pregnant woman, whose name was Claire. Vivian explained that the officers were there because a lender had reported irregular signatures and conflicting information after Marcus attempted another transaction that afternoon.

Claire’s face changed as quickly as mine had. She stared at Marcus and whispered, “You told me you were divorced.” Then she looked at the engagement ring sitting between them. Marcus tried insisting everything could be explained privately, but Vivian kept the conversation focused on the documents. I learned that Claire had believed Marcus was separated and financially independent. She had not known I existed as his current wife, just as I had known nothing about her pregnancy.

Elliot finally explained why he had approached me. He worked with one of the companies reviewing Marcus’s financial activity and recognized me from documents attached to the disputed accounts. He had seen Marcus enter the restaurant with Claire and realized I was sitting nearby wearing a wedding ring. He did not know every detail, but he knew enough to stop me from confronting Marcus before the records could be preserved.

The marriage ended after that night. My attorney separated my legitimate obligations from anything Marcus had attempted without my authorization, while investigators and lenders handled the disputed transactions properly. Claire eventually contacted me once, not to apologize, but to tell me she had ended things too. I never smashed the wine glass. I’m grateful I didn’t. The kiss had felt like the worst betrayal imaginable. By midnight, I understood it was only the first lie I happened to see with my own eyes.
