Inside Her Apartment, I Discovered Why She Had Chosen Me

I expected to find a cramped apartment filled with old furniture and unpaid bills. Instead, everything was neat and carefully arranged. The cupboards were stocked with food, unopened medicine covered the counter, and several envelopes of cash sat inside a drawer.

I turned to her relative, confused. If she had money, why had she spent years begging in the street?

Then he handed me a letter addressed to me.

The woman explained that her cough came from a chronic illness, but she had never been contagious. After her husband died, loneliness became harder to bear than sickness. Asking for food or medicine gave her a reason to speak to people, yet most neighbours avoided her without ever asking what she truly needed.

She had quietly saved much of the money I gave her. Not because she wanted to deceive me, but because my visits mattered more than anything I brought. In the letter, she wrote that I was the only person who looked directly at her instead of stepping away.

She had left me her modest savings and a box of photographs, but there was one condition: I had to use part of the money to help other elderly people living alone.

I cried as I read her final sentence: “You never treated me like a problem. You treated me like a person.”

I had believed I was giving her food and spare change. In reality, the greatest thing I gave her was a few minutes of human kindness.
