My fingers touched something cold beneath the popcorn. I pulled out a folded receipt wrapped around a tiny key and three words written in black marker: CHECK HIS JACKET. My stomach tightened. I glanced toward the ticket counter. The girl who had handed me the tub was pretending to wipe the register, but she kept looking in my direction. The guy I was seeing, Ryan, walked back smiling and reached for the popcorn. I moved it away and told him I wanted to use the restroom first. He shrugged, completely unsuspecting.
When I returned, his jacket was hanging over the back of his seat while he watched the previews. I quietly slipped my hand into the inside pocket. There was a small metal locker key with the same number scratched into it as the one hidden in the popcorn. Underneath it sat a second phone. My heart started pounding. The screen lit up with a message from someone saved as “Maya”: “Did she notice you’re wearing the same jacket from last night?” I nearly dropped it.
I walked straight back to the lobby and found the concession girl. Her face changed when she saw the phone. “I’m Maya’s sister,” she whispered. She explained that Ryan had been dating her sister for almost a year. Maya had recently discovered he was seeing several women and had confronted him that afternoon. He denied everything and told her she was imagining things. Her sister recognized him the second he walked into the theater with me.
I didn’t return to the movie. I left the second phone and both keys on Ryan’s empty seat with one note: Ask Maya why.
Then I blocked his number before he could even reach the parking lot.
