Grandpa’s New Estate Plan Changed Everything

The next morning, Grandpa was waiting with Martin Galloway, his estate attorney, and a folder containing the bank transfer from four years earlier. The memo line was unmistakable: Connor Ayers — student loan payoff. Grandpa told me he had already instructed Martin to document the missing $78,000 and arrange repayment of my remaining student debt directly to the lender. “I meant to help you once,” he said. “I’m not going to make you lose that gift because someone else ignored my instructions.”

Then Martin explained the larger change. Grandpa had previously planned to divide most of his estate equally between Mom and me and Amber through trusts. That structure was being revised. Mom would no longer serve as trustee or control money intended for anyone else. Her own inheritance would remain protected in a separate trust managed by an independent professional, while education and future family gifts would be distributed directly to the intended recipients.
