I called the lender before Brandon could stop me. I explained that I had never authorized any loan against my property and that the house had come from my grandmother, with title registered solely in my name. Then I photographed every envelope on the floor and sent the images to my lawyer. By morning, the lender had frozen the application, and the disputed title documents were flagged for review. Whatever Brandon and Monica believed they had arranged was no longer moving quietly.
The evidence became worse once everything was examined. Hargrove Family Holdings Ltd. had been incorporated only weeks earlier, with Monica listed as a director. Several documents carried what appeared to be my signature, but I had never signed them. My missing bank notices and replacement credit card had also been inside her suitcase. Brandon finally admitted he knew about the plan. He claimed they intended to borrow against the house, repay Monica’s debts, and “put everything back later.”
I did not argue with either of them. After Brandon had shoved me in front of our son, the situation was no longer something I was willing to handle privately. I documented what happened, sought legal advice, and arranged for Monica and her children to leave through the proper process. Brandon moved out as well while the financial and property issues were investigated.
Months later, the title remained in my name, the loan never funded, and the questionable documents were handled through the appropriate authorities and legal channels. Eli eventually stopped asking whether Auntie’s “secret game” was coming back. I told him no secrets involving Mommy’s mail were allowed anymore. Brandon had said family always came first. He was right about one thing. I simply stopped pretending that protecting people who betrayed me was the same as protecting my family.
