The Folder Revealed What Preston Had Hidden

Walter opened the folder and showed me copies of documents Gerald had prepared years earlier. When I sold my apartment, the money I gave Preston had not been intended as an informal family gift. Gerald had insisted that any large transfer to our son be documented. Nearly $180,000 had been advanced through a private family note, secured against Preston’s house and recorded through an attorney. I had forgotten about it because Gerald handled the paperwork before he died.

Walter explained that Preston had stopped making the agreed payments almost three years earlier. More troubling, he had recently applied to refinance the property without disclosing the full history of the family obligation. The documents did not mean I could simply seize the house or remove anyone overnight, but they gave my attorney something very different from the helpless position Preston assumed I occupied.
