Lottie’s phone was playing an audio recording from nine years earlier. Our oldest daughter, Madison, had accidentally captured it on an old tablet while recording herself in the hallway. Tiffany’s voice came through clearly: “I love my kids, but I’m not wasting my life raising six of them.” Then Trent asked whether she actually loved him. Tiffany laughed. “I love the life you can give me. That’s what matters.” Trent’s face changed before the recording even finished.
Lottie had discovered the file months earlier while transferring old family videos. She had never shown me because she worried it would hurt me. But when Tiffany arrived pretending she had left to create a “better life” for the children, Lottie decided she could no longer listen quietly. Tiffany screamed at her, calling her disrespectful, but Madison stepped between them and said, “She didn’t make you say it.”
Then Trent asked Tiffany a question that silenced the room. “Was I just money to you?” She tried explaining that the recording was old and taken out of context, but everyone had heard enough. Trent walked outside alone. The expensive gifts remained in my hallway. Lottie eventually asked me to return them because she didn’t want presents used as proof that nine years of absence should suddenly be forgotten.
Tiffany left the party without receiving the reunion she expected. Over the following months, she began contacting the children individually, this time without expensive gifts or dramatic promises. Some answered. Others did not. I never told them what relationship they should have with her. That choice belonged to them. Lottie kept one thing from that birthday—the recording. Not because she wanted revenge, but because it reminded her of something she had learned far too young: people can rewrite their reasons years later, but sometimes the truth survives in their own voice.
