The first three cars slowed when they saw us standing on the porch. Then more appeared behind them. Brielle immediately started waving people away, but several had already paid her $35 and wanted answers. I did not embarrass anyone. I simply explained that the event had been canceled because the property had been advertised and used without my permission. When one guest asked whether refunds would be issued, every eye turned toward Brielle.
Dad tried pulling me aside. He admitted he knew Brielle had used my card for the graduation vendors, but claimed he believed I would “understand afterward.” He insisted he knew nothing about the earlier paid weekends. Brielle finally admitted she had hosted several small gatherings while I was away and had used the money for school expenses, clothes, and part of a trip. The $7,100 on my card had made those events look more profitable than they actually were.
I kept the sheriff’s report open and provided the credit-card company with every screenshot and receipt they requested. The disputed charges were reviewed individually, and Brielle eventually agreed to repay the amounts she had personally authorized rather than let the matter become an even larger dispute. My parents covered none of it for her. For once, Dad did not rescue her from the consequences of something she had planned.
The cabin remained mine, and nobody used it again without written permission. Months later, I hosted a small cookout for Corinne, a few coworkers, and the electrician who had helped me during the renovation. Dad eventually apologized for calling my work insignificant while standing inside something my work had built. I kept the old carpenter’s pencil he mocked that night. It still sits in a kitchen drawer beside the deed. Brielle had cropped my shadow out of her photograph, but she learned something the hard way: removing someone from a picture does not remove their name from the property.
