Most people have used nail clippers hundreds of times without ever stopping to examine the little details built into them. One feature that often gets overlooked is the tiny hole found near the end of many clippers. It looks almost too small to matter, which is why plenty of people assume it is simply part of the manufacturing process. In reality, that little opening usually has a very practical purpose: it can be used to attach the clipper to a key ring, chain, or small lanyard.
That might sound unnecessary today, but compact grooming tools were often designed to be carried around. Attaching a nail clipper to a keychain made it much harder to lose and allowed people to keep one with them while traveling, working, camping, or simply going about their day. Some clippers are even sold with a short chain already fitted through the hole, while others leave it empty so the owner can decide how they want to carry it.
