At first glance, this object looks more like a homemade fishing tool or some kind of strange ornament than a toy. But it is actually a set of clackers, also known as Klick-Klacks, Ker-Bangers, and several other names. The classic design used two hard plastic balls attached to opposite ends of a cord, with a ring or grip in the middle. The toy became especially popular during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
To use clackers, you placed a finger through the ring and moved your hand up and down. The two balls would swing toward each other and strike with a sharp “clack.” With enough practice, players could build momentum until the balls collided both above and below the hand in a continuous motion. The challenge was keeping the rhythm going without losing control, and the loud repetitive sound became part of what made the toy so memorable.
Unfortunately, the original versions also developed a reputation for being dangerous. Some hard plastic balls could crack or shatter after repeatedly smashing together, while cords or attachments could sometimes fail. In the United States, safety rules were introduced requiring clacker balls to meet durability standards because of injuries caused by broken pieces or detached balls. Decades later, unsafe versions were still being seized or recalled.
That history explains why many younger people have never seen a set like this before. Safer variations appeared later, but the original heavy clackers largely disappeared from everyday toy boxes. Today, finding an old pair in a drawer or attic can feel like discovering a completely mysterious object. Yet for people who grew up around the 1970s, those two little balls and their unmistakable clacking sound may instantly bring back memories of one of the era’s strangest toy crazes.
