Frank Denton looked at the security guard first. “Take your hand away from your belt. Mr. Holt is not a threat to anyone in this building.” Then he turned toward the teller. “Clarence Holt has banked here longer than you’ve been alive, and he deserves exactly the same respect whether he arrives in muddy overalls or a three-piece suit.” The woman who had laughed behind us quietly collected her purse and left the lobby.
Then Frank explained why Grandpa’s name had brought him running. During the agricultural crash decades earlier, when several local farms and businesses were struggling, Grandpa had invested part of his savings in the small community bank rather than moving his money elsewhere. He still owned shares and had remained one of its longest-standing customers. More importantly, Frank’s own father had once received help from Grandpa when his farm was close to foreclosure. Frank had never forgotten it.
Grandpa seemed almost embarrassed by the attention. He did not demand that the teller be fired. Instead, he asked Frank to make sure employees received better training on how elderly and rural customers were treated. “Muddy boots don’t tell you what’s inside somebody’s account,” Grandpa said. “And even if I had twenty dollars instead of twenty thousand, she still shouldn’t have talked to me that way.”
Frank personally processed the $2,500 withdrawal and offered to have the tractor dealer paid directly, but Grandpa wanted the cash exactly as he had requested. An hour later, we were standing at the equipment counter ordering the replacement parts. On the drive home, I asked why he had never told me about his connection to the bank. Grandpa shrugged and looked toward the fields. “Because money isn’t supposed to make people treat you better.” Then he smiled. “But sometimes it teaches you a lot when they think you don’t have any.”
